Methionine provides a methyl group for important processes such as DNA methylation, chlorophyll biosynthesis or cell wall biosynthesis. In addition, it acts as a precursor to the synthesis of ethylene hormone, polyamines that act as growth factors (spermidine and spermine), molecules with activity against abiotic stress (glycine-betaine) and molecules with activity against pests (glucosinolates).
