What is Horizon 2020?

Horizon 2020 is a flagship research and innovation programme of the European Union.

The European Union concentrates a large part of its research and innovation activities in the Framework Programme called Horizon 2020 (H2020). In the period between 2014-2020 and through the implementation of three fundamental pillars, it contributes to address the main social challenges, promote industrial leadership in Europe and reinforce the excellence of its scientific base. The available budget will amount to 76,880 million euros.

For the first time it integrates all phases, from the creation of knowledge to the activities closest to the market: basic research, technology development, demonstration projects, manufacturing pilot-lines, social innovation, technology transfer, concept tests, standardization, support to pre-commercial public purchases, venture capital and guarantee system.

Interesting Facts

Spain is the second country with more economic resources allocated by the H2020 program, between 2014 and 2018 the total value amounts to 225,737,684.00 €, after Germany with 244,257,214.00 € allocated.

In the last call, Spanish entities showed great interest in Horizon 2020, more than 32,000 proposals were submitted.

With regard to the areas and themes in which the H2020 Program is subdivided, Spain stands out as the first country with the most proposals in Innovation in SMEs with 18.3%, thanks to the excellent results of the SME Instrument, and it ranks second in Nanotechnologies, advanced materials, biotechnology and advanced manufacturing and transformation (NMBP) with 14.5%, in Action for climate, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials with 13.2% and in Science with and for the Society with 10.9%.
