Objetivos
General:
The general objective that Water2REturn proposes is an integrated solution for the treatment of slaughterhouse wastewater (SWW) and the recovery of nutrients, as well as for the recovery of valuable nutrients with high market value in the agricultural sector. The Water2REturn technology takes on a Circular Economy approach in which the nutrients (and energy resources) present in wastewater are recycled safely and efficiently in different ways and then reintroduced into the agricultural system as new raw materials.
Wastewater is, therefore, a source of nutrients, energy and water, and they are no longer a waste; turning wastewater treatment facilities into “biorefineries”. The Water2Return business model is based on a viable, intersectoral and integrated perspective for the recovery of water cycle resources, while considering relevant legal, social and market challenges.
Specific objectives:
- Water2REturn will recover soluble nitrogen and phosphorus from SWW as a nitrate concentrate (hereinafter referred to as SRM 1) an interesting option for use as fertilizer in agriculture (agronomic product 1).
- Its novelty is based on the use of an innovative fermentation process designed for the recovery of sewage sludge (with energy production) resulting in a solid fraction made of Bacillus spp. (hereinafter, SRM 2), also of interest as a biostimulant product (called agronomic product 2), with low development costs and high value-added in plant nutrition and agriculture.
- Additionally, the Water2REturn approach involves the production of algae biomass (SRM 3), which grows by capturing and recycling the CO2 released from the biogas unit, and it will be formulated in a product based on biostimulating algae (agronomic product 3). These three high-value agronomic products are free of pathogens, heavy metals and emerging pollutants,
which increases the safe reuse of the SWW.
