Objetivos
General:
BIOTAGUT has as main objective to identify the microbiome’s “healthy” pattern, as well as to evaluate the effect of foods that are part of the Mediterranean countries’ habitual diet on said microbiome, using both in vitro and in vivo methods in order to be able to design ingredients and products that have a positive impact on the metabolic health of the individual through the modulation of said microbiome.
Specific objectives:
- Define, by metagenomic and metabolomic analysis of samples from individuals in different conditions (healthy or with dysfunctions or pathologies associated with obesity and/or metabolic syndrome), the state of a “healthy” microbiome or objective microbiome.
- Design ingredients/foods capable of redirecting the microbiome to a “healthy” state “which can then be used in the prevention or treatment of obesity and its associated comorbidities.
- Evaluate in vitro the possible effect of the ingredients/foods on the microbiome in order to: select the most suitable candidates for in vivo trials, identify bacterial species/strains with probiotic potential and identify metabolites of colonic fermentation with possible biological activity (postbiotic) and, therefore, likely to be potential bioactive compounds in the near future.
- Develop methods that allow the cultivation in vitro of the strains identified in order to be able to produce them industrially in the future.
- To evaluate the biological activity of the possible postbiotics identified in the in vitro and in vivo models.
- Demonstrate in vivo , the effect of ingredients/foods on the microbiome in nutritional intervention trials in humans.
